About the encounter

The Richmond–Mahinda Cricket Encounter, fondly known as the Lovers' Quarrel, stands as one of the most treasured traditions in Sri Lankan school cricket. Played annually between the First XI teams of Richmond College and Mahinda College in the historic city of Galle, this encounter has grown far beyond the boundaries of sport to become a celebration of heritage, pride, and enduring rivalry.

For well over a century, generations of students, old boys, teachers, and supporters have gathered for this remarkable occasion. What began as a simple cricket match has evolved into one of the longest-running school cricket series in the country. Today the match is played at the iconic Galle International Cricket Stadium, standing proudly along the southern coast.

The origins trace back to 1905, under two visionary educators — Rev. James Horne Darrel of Richmond College and Sir Frank Lee Woodward of Mahinda College. Beginning in 2025, the Lovers' Quarrel entered a new chapter as a three-day encounter.

01

The First Flag

On the 1st of March each year, Richmond Prefects ceremonially raise their colours, marking the official start of the season. Mahinda follows soon after, signalling to the city that the season of tradition has begun.

Streets come alive with decorated vehicles, vibrant colours, and music. A moving celebration of identity and belonging where the passion that fuels the Lovers' Quarrel is made visible.

04

The Big Debate

Teams from both schools meet in a contest of wit, logic, and eloquence — a reminder that these traditions celebrate excellence not only in sport, but also in thought and character.

05

The THORANA

Led by the Senior Prefect, every Prefect contributes to this grand student tent assembled through the night before the match. Revealed at dawn — a visual symbol of unity and dedication.

06

Tea Break Tradition

Teachers of the visiting school are welcomed into the home school tent for tea, while Prefects return the gesture. In this exchange, rivalry gives way to friendship.

07

Principal's Dinner

Hosted by the Richmond Principal, this gathering brings together the cricket team, Masters-in-Charge, Prefects, Old Boys, and parents in an evening of recognition and fellowship.

08

The Last Flag

As the final session approaches, past prefects gather to hoist their College flag one last time — a symbolic farewell to a season of passion, unity, and tradition.

"This is not just cricket. It is a Tradition. It is a Celebration. This is the Richmond–Mahinda Lovers' Quarrel."
